Gracias Madre

Archival Pigment Print

2014

30" x 40"

From Root Division Publication: "My work is an exploration of image and identity within emerging and evolving technologies. I believe that technology allows marginalized voices to be heard and claim space. I approach art making through the aesthetics of the millennial generation by employing trends, social media, slang, and notions of hipsterdom as relevant tools to speak to my community. I navigate the religious imagery surrounding my heritage and adapt it to my hybrid reality. Gracias Madre aims to deconstruct the iconic Virgen de Guadalupe while exploring traditions of media and consumption. By creating large-scale digital manipulations completely from my cell phone I hope to illuminate a complex contemporary female representation that speaks to the multidimensionality of my queer Latina identity."
