Venezolanxs Respirando Resistencia’ intenta rendir homenaje a los que arriesgan sus vidas y a los que han muerto manifestando en Venezuela. Su valentía es un soplo de esperanza para muchos. Este trabajo también busca reconocer a los fotoperiodistas y fotógrafos que están documentando desde el frente de protesta, sin los cuales este trabajo no seria posible.
Cuando se trata de mantenerse informado, el monitoreo ansioso del flujo constante de chats con familiares transnacionales, las noticias y las redes sociales, se convierten en una actividad diaspórica obligatoria. Cuando la comunicación con Venezuela es limitada o la electricidad se corta durante días, es palpable cómo mi familia, ahora dispersa por el mundo, aguanta la respiración al unísono. La instalación ‘Venezolanxs Respirando Resistencia’ parece “respirar” cuando la audiencia camina entre los tapices colgantes, creando un movimiento ondulante y mimético. Monumentos en movimiento que evocan el aire y las olas del océano que nos separa. Actúan como una colección de recuerdos obtenidos de noticias enviadas por la familia, compuestas en 2019 durante eventos tensos en las situaciones que se desarrollan en Venezuela.
El diluvio constante de noticias trágicas puede ser abrumador. Nuevas imágenes reemplazando las pasadas excesivamente rápido. En este acto de recuerdo, interactúo a través del fotomontaje con las fotos y videos que llegan a mi teléfono. Pasar tiempo cortando y organizando cuidadosamente estas imágenes, me permite físicamente sostener pedazos de mi sufrimiento, transmutando mi anhelo en acción. Esta colección se convierte en una expresión de emociones diaspóricas fragmentadas, que intentan conectar un sentimiento que se ahoga, con una experiencia inaccesible. Tejiendo años de conflicto complejo para crear una imagen delicada y reiterada. Se conmemora a los manifestantes con tela fina y transparente para darle aliento al frente del combate Venezolanx. Restos físicos de mi experiencia digital, separada de mis seres queridos por el tiempo y el espacio. Estas ‘banderas’ conmemoran la valiente resistencia venezolana y los momentos difíciles en los que no pude estar en Venezuela para apoyar a mi familia.

[Venezuelans Breathing Resistance]
‘Venezolanxs Respirando Resistencia’ (Venezeulans Breathing Resistance) aims to pay tribute to the protestors risking their lives in Venezuela, and those who have died demonstrating. Their bravery is a breath of hope to many. This work also seeks to recognize the photojournalists and photographers who are documenting from protest frontlines, without whom this work would not be possible.
Anxiously monitoring the constant flow of transnational-family chats and social media news feeds has become a familiar diasporian effort to try to stay informed. When communication with those in Venezuela is limited or the electricity is out for days, it can feel like my dispersed family holds its breath in unison. In installation, ‘Venezolanxs Respirando Resistencia’ appears to ‘breathe’ as the audience walks between the hanging tapestries to create rippling, memetic movement. These moving monuments, reminiscent of breath and the ocean waves separating us, act as a collection of memories, sourced from news sent by family across the globe, and composed in 2019 during tense events in Venezuela.
The constant deluge of tragic news can feel overwhelming with many images too quickly forgotten for the next. In this act of remembrance, I interact with the screen captures and video stills that pass through my phone via photomontage. Spending time carefully cutting and arranging the images enables me to hold pieces of my suffering in my hands, transmuting longing into action. These assemblages become an expression of my fragmented, diasporic emotions, attempting to bridge feeling inundated with an inaccessible experience. Weaving years of complex conflict, sheer and echoed. I seek to memorialize the protesters who are breathing new life into the frontlines of Venezuela in delicate fabric; the objects sway in waves of pride and pain. Physical remnants of my digital experience, separated from my loved ones by time and space. These ‘flags’ commemorate brave Venezuelan resistance, and the difficult moments I could not be in Venezuela to support my family through.
